Cold galvanized pigtail bolt

Pigtail hooks are a common fastener, mainly used in power systems (such as transmission towers and substations) to ground equipment or wires and release static electricity or fault current. The "pigtail" end can be wrapped around the grounding wire or structure to ensure reliable contact; at the same time, auxiliary fixation (such as tying cables and hanging accessories) can be achieved through the tail.

Advantages of electroplated galvanized pigtail hooks

Corrosion resistance and economy: The cold-dip galvanized layer (5~20μm) provides basic anti-rust protection and is suitable for general outdoor environments. The cost is lower than hot-dip galvanizing or stainless steel, suitable for batch application

Flexibility: The tail can be bent and adjusted to adapt to different installation angles.

Introduction to production process

(1) Material selection

Bolt body: low carbon steel (such as Q235, A36) or medium carbon steel (such as Grade 4.8, 8.8).

Coating material: zinc (electroplated zinc layer is usually 5~20μm).

(2) Processing Flow

Forming:

Cold Forging: Use a cold forging machine to process the wire into the bolt head and threaded part (the accuracy must be controlled to 6g/6H level).

Tail Bending: Use a special mold to bend the tail end into a spiral or hook shape (the common angle is 90°~180°).

Thread processing:

Thread rolling machine processes threads (metric such as M10, M12, or imperial such as 1/2"-13).

Heat treatment (optional):

Medium and high grade bolts (such as 8.8 grade) require tempering treatment (quenching + tempering).

Surface treatment:

Cold galvanizing (electrogalvanizing):

Pretreatment: pickling and rust removal → water washing → activation.

Electroplating: Electrodeposit zinc layer in electrolyte (zinc salt solution) (thickness is usually 8~12μm).

Passivation: Chromate passivation (blue-white/color) enhances corrosion resistance.

Other options: phosphating (increases coating adhesion).

Quality inspection and packaging:

Check coating thickness (magnetic thickness gauge), thread gauge test, salt spray test (more than 72 hours).
